Lattice Degeneration of Retina

Lattice Degeneration of Retina

What is Lattice degeneration?
Lattice degeneration is a thinning of the retina in the periphery (away from macula).

Is Lattice Degeneration common ?
It occurs in 7–8% of the general population, most often in patients with myopia (nearsightedness) and over the age of 20. Approximately 45% of those affected have lattice degeneration in both eyes.

What are the symptoms of Lattice degeneration?
Lattice degeneration does not have any symptoms. But because the retina is thinner with lattice degeneration, it may tear, break, or get holes easier. This can lead to retinal detachment.

Symptoms of retinal tears and detachment are:
• new floaters
• flashing lights
• a shadow or gray curtain blocking a part of your vision
• blurry vision or change in vision

What is the cause of lattice degeneration ?
Exact cause of lattice degeneration is not known. It is seen more commonly in patients with :
• Myopia
• Family history
• Connective tissue disorders - Marfan syndrome, Stickler syndrome etc.

How can we diagnose Lattice Degeneration ?
Lattice degeneration is diagnosed clinically by Indirect Ophthalmoscopy done after dilating your eyes with eye drops.

How can lattice degeneration be treated ?
• Observation - in some cases of lattice degeneration, no treatment is necessary
• Delimiting Laser Treatment or Cryotherapy - To prevent risk of retinal detachment. This is generally recommended when the other eye has had a retinal detachment, the lattice appears more dangerous, presence of retinal tear, strong family history of retinal detachment, etc.

Are there any side-effects of the Laser Treatment or Cryotherapy?
These Delimiting Laser or Cryotherapy are very safe with practically no significant complications. However one must understand that despite the treatment, there is still a small risk of retinal detachments or appearance of new lesions. Therefore the patients need to maintain regular retinal checkups in the future.
